Overhead in information systems is a combination of redundant computation, memory, bandwidth, or other resources needed to perform a particular task. It is considered when selecting algorithms, types, or data structures.

Overhead can be a deciding factor when adding features for new products or when fixing bugs. If a new functionality has a high Overhead, it should be rejected.
