Bhyve

gradient

Bhyve is a type 2 hypervisor. The second type of hypervisor implies installation on top of the base OS. Bhyve is currently considered the only BSD-licensed source code hypervisor.

How it works

Bhyve belongs to the second or host type of hypervisor – an additional software layer that is superimposed on the operating system. In other words, the hypervisor acts as another processor on the underlying OS.

Bhyve is supported by operating systems such as OmniOS, SmartOS, *BSD.

Features:

  • Bhyve’s performance is much better than that of similar virtual machine managers;
  • compared to similar hypervisors, the Bhyve code is more compact.

Bhyve supports most processors (Intel, AMD).
